Carrak Consulting had a great day out this month, helping at the School Mining Games held at King Edward Mine Museum.
The School Mining Games is an annual event where Year 8 primary school children from across the county take part in mining related activities including mucking, surveying, hand steeling, sawing and mineral separation. The event connects young people with their industrial heritage and hopes to inspire them towards a rewarding career in engineering or geoscience.
This year, despite the hot weather, 125 students in teams from 10 schools competed fiercely, with great enthusiasm and team spirit. There were also an incredible 60 volunteers to make everything happen, as well as 30 very hands-on teachers!
First place went to Truro School who were presented with the Kurt Jackson trophy. In second place was Helston School, whilst third went to the nearby Pool Academy. All pupils received a medal to mark their efforts and were treated to a high-speed demonstration in mucking by Camborne School of Mines students.
We are all looking forward to next year’s Games and encourage more local schools to get involved!
